A popular type of antenna mount is called an “NMO” which stands for new Motorola. NMO mounts are devised to have a standard threaded connector where you screw on the antenna of choice to the mount of choice. The NMO mount itself connects to the antenna and provides the antenna cable as well.
Are all NMO mounts the same?
Depending on the manufacturer, the appearance of a NMO type mount on an antenna can vary. However, even though they appear different, since they are NMO type mounts, they will work with any NMO mounts we discussed earlier. As you can see in the picture, the center contacts vary on these antenna bases.
What does NMO stand for?
Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is a central nervous system disorder that primarily affects the eye nerves (optic neuritis) and the spinal cord (myelitis).
Do NMO mounts need a ground plane?
Remember..it only counts as a ground plane if you have a good electrical connection between the shield of your coax and the hood at the base of the antenna (one of several reasons to use NMO over mag mounts). 1/2 wave antennas fed in the center (a dipole) do not require a ground plane.
How does an NMO mount work?
NMO mounts have two waterproof seals, so if installed right it should prevent the car from rusting out. The first seal, or waterproof gasket, is placed directly against the metal of your vehicle or another metallic surface, while the second sits inside the antenna. This keeps the connection point of the antenna dry.
What is an NMO adapter?
The OPEK NMO-3-1 is an antenna mount installation hardware kit. Although it is typically mounted on a vehicle it is often installed in field applications inside cabinets and enclosures. It can also be mounted to the OPEK AM-403 Stainless Steel Mounting Bracket. NMO stands for new Motorola. NMO Antenna Connector.
